The Rush to Find a Valentine Isn’t Worth It | Michigan Depression Treatment Center

Being single on Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be the end of the world. If you’re trying to rush to get a date in time, you aren’t doing yourself any favors. You should never put a deadline on getting into a relationship, and you certainly shouldn’t use that to mark your happiness. Let’s take a look at why it’s okay to be single on Valentine’s Day, courtesy of our depression treatment center in Michigan.

Many Couples Do Not Celebrate Valentine’s Day

One of the main reasons why people get depressed on Valentine’s Day is fear of missing out. They think that everyone else is out celebrating and they’re being left behind. In all reality, a large portion of couples do not celebrate Valentine’s Day. Many do not want to give into the hype, and others see little value in that day.

In our couples counseling sessions, we encourage couples to treat every day as a special moment with their significant other. A set date on the calendar should not change the way couples interact. If you’re not in a relationship at the moment, don’t worry. There are plenty of other people who are not celebrating as well.

Rush Dating Is Not Worth The Disappointment

If you speed up the dating process, you’re almost guaranteed to be disappointed. Instead of looking for someone you could genuinely be in a relationship with, you settle for whoever will be around on February 14th. When the “big day” is over, your depression symptoms may get worse because the date did not live up to your expectations. Your match will come at its own time, but it may not be the time you have set in your mind.

Be Your Own Valentine

The most important relationship you will ever have is with yourself. If your depression comes from low self-esteem and insecurity, take time to boost your confidence. W work with a depression counselor to reverse negative thought patterns and find activities that bring joy to your life. Do not feel pressured to do something on Valentine’s Day. Treat it like any other day. Go out with friends or stay home and watch a movie. It’s Wednesday night – nothing more.
